This is a regular position in a first shift for our Caguas site.

Position Summary

  • Under the direction of the EHS Administrator, the EHS Specialist assist in developing, implementation and monitoring of programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state and local health and safety regulations. Monitor the workplace environment by analyzing work processes, materials, equipment and the work habits of employees and ensures appropriate corrective action is taken where hazards exits.Assist in developing and overseeing EHS training programs for employees in areas such as employee-right-to-know, hazardous material handling, laser safety, emergency response, industrial hygiene, and life safety. Plan and schedule work to meet deadlines established by others to ensure the completion of several related tasks. Uses judgment in data analysis to develop and design solutions to difficult health and safety problems.

Essential Functions

  • Performs traditional EHS duties such as job safety analyses, health and safety training, workplace incident investigations, workplace safety inspections and internal audits as directed. Conduct ergonomic risk assessments and provide appropriate corrective action recommendations. Review new hazardous materials and check incoming material for SDS’s, unique usage and storage characteristics. Work with end user to ensure proper usage and disposal. Provides guidance as necessary.

  • Active participation in ISO 14001 process and its maintenance by performing the following tasks: Conduct EMS internal Audits during the year according to schedule. Conduct EMS Audits to suppliers during the year according to schedule. Prepare Audits reports according to schedule.

  • Conduct reviews for facility modification, new product development, product modification and new equipment/machinery as directed. Select and applies professional health and safety principles, theories and concepts and uses independent judgment to develop and design imaginative, thorough and practical solutions to difficult health and safety issues.

  • Support all Divisional initiatives as identified by divisional management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements. Ensure compliance with all ABBOTT/ SJM procedures and all applicable regulatory agency requirements.

  • Other duties as assigned than includes but are not limited to: Conduct on boarding Training and Contractor Safety & EMS Training; Provide support on the development and implementation of Continues Improvement projects related to environmental, Safety, building and grounds; Work with all supplier and services companies the annual Proposal in coordination with the EHS Administrator; Give access to new employees; deactivate access to terminated employees through the Access Control System; After consultation with the EHS Administrator, the EHS Specialist has the authority to properly address EHS remediation or emergencies. The EHS Specialist has the authority to recommend or to stop any activity having the potential of creating an imminent risk to safety or the environment, performed by employees or contractors.

  • Collect and prepare, Diesel, Water, Alcohol and Recycling monthly consumption reports to meet reporting requirements. Assist the Principal EHS Administrator to prepare the regulatory Agency reports.

  • Work under the supervision of the EHS Administrator, independently working and solving day-to-day problems. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field. Master degree preferred.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years experience in the Health and Safety field with both hands on and program management experience.

  • Ability to navigate and interpret OSHA regulations, fire codes and applicable regulations.

  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and daily responsibilities.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in Spanish and English.

  • Ability to discern and appropriately communicate sensitive issues.

  • Computer literacy: Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
